Mind and Body Connection
The interaction between mental health and physical health has been well-established in research. The close relationship between mind and body is evident in a number of physical health issues including:
- Chronic Pain
- Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Cardiovascular Conditions
According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, two thirds (2/3) of all office visits to family physicians are due to stress-related symptoms.
Benefits of Therapy
Recent research has demonstrated that patients involved in therapy report significantly less psychological distress about their condition and develop more effective coping skills to actively manage their condition. As such, behavioral medicine should be considered a critical part of your comprehensive treatment of patients. Collaboration with a psychologist enhances your treatment of patients in many ways, such as:
- Addressing patients’ mental health issues that affect adherence to medical treatment regimens.
- Increasing motivation to make healthy lifestyle changes that may impact the severity of physical health problems.
Upon completing a thorough initial evaluation an individualized treatment plan will be developed to target the specific needs of each patient. Empirically supported treatments available include:
- Breath Retraining
- Guided Imagery
- Insight-Oriented Psychotherapy
- Progressive Muscle Relaxation
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Behavior Modification
