Often seen as a victimless crime, sports gambling is more than betting $50 on your favorite team; it’s a multibillion-dollar, illegal and mobcontrolled industry. Author Brian Tuohy has dug into this vast underworld through interviews with sports gambling insiders and former FBI agents as well as detailing information from more than 400 previously unreleased FBI case files to reveal how professional athletes and referees have been corrupted into fixing games in the NFL, NBA, MLB, boxing, soccer, and tennis.

Suggested questions:

  • How much is wagered legally and illegally on sports in the US each year?
  • Who controls the illegal sports gambling market?
  • Why should sports gambling be legalized in the US?
  • Why do the sports leagues lie about the fight to legalize sports gambling, and what aren’t they telling their fans in regards to this subject?
  • What can we learn from legal sports gambling in Europe?
  • How much game fixing occurs in sports around the world?
  • When was the last time a professional game fixed in the US?
  • How did I obtain the FBI files I used to write the book, and what do they reveal?
  • Is the FBI still investigating game fixing?
  • How easy is it to fix a game today?
  • How often does it occur?
  • What sports is the easiest to fix, and who is easier to approach: a player or a referee?
  • Is any sport safe from such corruption?
  • Let me know if you need anything else.

Erin Merryn, 9:06 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Website: Erin’s Law Twitter:  ErinnMerryn Facebook: Erin’s Law

Erin Merryn, MSW, is the author of AN UNIMAGINABLE ACT: Overcoming and Preventing Child Abuse Through Erin’s Law (Health Communications, 2013) as well as two memoirs about child sexual abuse. Erin was named Glamour magazine’s 2012 Woman of the Year, has been featured in the Chicago Tribune and Time and appeared on CNN, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America and more.

Despite being well-trained at school, Erin Merryn never had to run out of a burning building, take cover from a tornado, or run away from a stranger trying to take her innocence. Unfortunately, what Erin did have to worry about—being among the one out of four girls who would become a victim of sexual abuse before their 18th birthdays—was never addressed in the classroom or at home.

Victimized by a neighborhood boy at age 6 and again by a cousin at 11, Erin has made it her mission to give voice to the largely silent victims of childhood sexual abuse and to push for the passage of Erin’s Law requiring classroom education about sexual abuse across the nation.
