Dr. Stephen Weiss, 8:06 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.   Book:  Second Chance

Steve Weiss, an American living in London, is 87 years old. Dr. Weiss has a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, another in War Studies, and a PhD. in War Studies, specializing in Combat Fatigue and Post Traumatic Stress. As a veteran, he served with the 36th ‘Texas’ Infantry Division in Italy, France, and Germany, and for this wartime service in the O.S.S. & the French Resistance, he was highly decorated.

Questions:

  • Why did you write your latest book, ‘Second Chance‘ so long after the end of World War II? (Its available on Amazon).
  • Did you consider, author, Stud Terkel’s, description of it, as a ‘Good War?’  or Tom Brokaw’s title, ‘ The Greatest Generation? Would you suggest reading, Charlie Glass’ recent book, ‘The Deserters,’ as a response to Tom Brokaw’s?
  • Did we build memorials after war based on clarity of memory that includes sacrifice or courage? Are those who died mentioned by name?
  • In what army roles did men serve in the U.S. military?
  • And how many men served during the war? In the Ground Forces? For what reasons?
  • How well did the army train and serve the needs of the men inducted?  The needs of the nation?
  • Could you explain the definition and the actual use of the Army ‘Replacement System?’.
  • Did it work?
  • What do you know about ‘breakdown’ and combat fatigue on the front line? Frontline psychiatry?
  • Did you and those with whom you served suffer from combat fatigue, combat exhaustion, termed in later conflicts as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
  • What was the proscribed treatment for those who suffered from their symptoms? By whom? And for how long?
  • Do the army and the government bear any responsibility for the mental and physical effects of war inflicted on our soldier citizenry? Treatment?

Joe Wojcik is a bullying expert who uses a unique persona known as Joe the Biker to presents his anti-bullying message.  Credentials: Joe appeared weekly on the award winning ABC affiliate WGGB’s segment “Bully Busters” which won the Associated Press Award for Public Affairs.  He is the Founder and Executive Director of the non-profit organization, The Yubbie Foundation a 501 (3) non-profit. And he has been a foster parent to over 100 inner-city at risk teens.
