Book: Poetry of Three Generations Book:  Never Forget My Soul

Michael Milgraum is an attorney and a psychologist, who maintains a psychological private practice in Silver Spring, Maryland. He is a child of a Holocaust survivor, who lectures nationally about political persecution, the Holocaust, and trauma. He is the author of Never Forget My Soul, a novel describing the multigenerational effects of trauma and pathways to psychological and spiritual healing.

Talking Points:

  • It’s now almost 70 years since the end of World War II, why do you think we still need to pay attention to the Holocaust?
  • In your book “Never Forget My Soul,” you talk about how the horrendous and traumatic events during the Holocaust continue to affect people up until this day.  How?
  • You talk a lot about psychological healing in your book.  How can people heal from this past?
  • Spirituality is also an important part of the book.  Does someone necessarily have to focus on spirituality in order to heal from trauma?
  • Talk about the role of community in the healing process.
  • Group therapy is an important theme in your book.  How does group therapy help people rebuild social bonds?
  • With all the benefits of group therapy, is it preferable to individual therapy.
  • How does the philosophy of Holocaust survivor and psychiatrist Victor Frankl (who wrote the bestseller Man’s Search for Meaning)  figure into what you are saying about healing from such extreme trauma?
  • Meaning is a very abstract concept.  Does it just depend on what each person decides that it is for them?
  • What are the signs of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder?
  • How does PTSD affect relationships?
  • How has being a child of a Holocaust survivor impacted on your life?
  • How do you keep faith in humanity…or have you lost it?
  • How does it feel to have your history and work with present survivors of torture?
  • You have a new book out, called Poetry of Three Generations, with your father, yourself and your daughter as authors. Talk about how you see poetry and writing as a vehicle to healing?
  • Do you feel this joint writing project has created an extra bond between you and your family?
